SAFETY INSPECTIONS

The University of Florida State Motor Vehicle Inspection Program was instituted in 1995 to help ensure that state vehicles assigned to the University of Florida are adequately maintained for safe operation. Annual vehicle inspection is mandatory for all University vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, vans or any other motorized conveyance that is required to have a state license plate). Vehicles assigned to University of Florida departments or associated organizations (Athletic Association, Shands Hospital, etc.) that are located in Alachua County must receive this annual "safety check" at the Physical Plant Division Motor Pool.

UF departments operating vehicles outside Alachua County should develop a preventative maintenance and inspection program with a commercial service station. In order to assist these organizations, the Motor Pool can provide copies of the University's Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual and any technical advice and support needed. A form is provided for the service station to complete during the inspection. Please see the PPD web site home page under the "Forms" section for Motor Pool Safety Inspection Form or click here Motor Pool Safety Inspection.

The owning department is responsible for scheduling a vehicle's safety inspection prior to the expiration date indicated on the Safety Check Inspection Decal located on the inside lower left hand corner of the vehicle's windshield. The expiration date is the last calendar day of the month punched on the decal. Appointments for safety inspections can be made by calling the Motor Pool at 392-1131. The owning department will be charged a minimum of $36.00 for the safety inspection and decal. A valid account and encumbrance number must be provided to Motor Pool prior to the inspection.

Because this inspection is mandatory, the University Police Department will leave a notice of violation of University policy on any vehicle found without a current inspection decal. If the vehicle does not receive the required inspection within 15 days of this notice of violation, the vehicle may be impounded until a safety inspection occurs. Further, Motor Pool personnel are authorized to remove any vehicle from service that does not pass the safety inspection.

Motor Pool offers a Full Service Preventative Maintenance Program for all state vehicles. The Preventative Maintenance service includes all items covered by the safety inspection and additional inspection and lubrication services that are essential for obtaining longer life and improved operation from a vehicle. UF departments utilizing an outside vendor for preventative maintenance will still be required to have an annual safety inspection at the Motor Pool.
