PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS
Evaluating the employee’s performance and supplying informal feedback should be an ongoing activity throughout the year. A formal performance appraisal is accomplished at least once each year by supervisors during the month of March. The Performance Management Initiative implemented a single annual rating cycle for all employees at the University, from March 1st of the previous year, until February 28th of the current year. Special appraisals are still available and will be used for a specified period of time outside of the annual rating cycle. All USPS and non-exempt TEAMS will be appraised using a new Performance Appraisal form and Exempt TEAMS employees will continue to be appraised using a narrative format.
This Performance Appraisal process provides the employee an opportunity to provide input into his or her annual appraisal process. The subsequent discussion between the employee and his or her supervisor should result in a more accurate analysis and evaluation of the employee’s performance for the past year and also provide a clearer understanding of the goals and expectations of the employee for the up-coming year.
The Performance Appraisal form is to be used for all USPS and non-exempt TEAMS employees. It has standardized the evaluation criteria for effected employees into five types – ‘Work Performance’, ‘Attendance/Reliability’, ‘Customer Service’, ‘ Initiative/ Productivity’, and ‘Teamwork/Interpersonal Skills’. Goals have also been incorporated into the evaluation process to provide more clear expectations for the following year.
The Performance Appraisal form has expanded the available ratings from three to five – Below, Minimally Achieves, Achieves, Above Average, and Exceeds. The addition of the two new ratings, namely ‘Minimal Achieves’ and ‘Above Average’, should allow more flexibility and will better reflect actual performance.
The overall rating will be determined by applying a point system from 1 for a ‘Below”,
up to a 5 for an ‘Exceeds’ for each category. Adding the five category ratings together
will determine the overall rating for all categories. The overall rating will then be determined as
follows:
a total of 24-25 points will receive an ‘Exceeds’ rating
20-23 an ‘Above Average’ rating
15-19 an ‘Achieves’ rating
10-14 a ‘Minimal Achieves’ rating
and 5-9 a ‘Below’ rating
