PPD FLEET MANAGEMENT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
As the University of Florida continues with its sustainability initiatives, we are announcing a new comprehensive fleet management program. The intent of this program is to reduce the number of university vehicles on campus, while providing cost effective alternatives to vehicle ownership. Goals of this program include the optimization of vehicle and fuel efficiency and a transition to low-carbon and alternative fuels. Read The University of Florida Memorandum to: Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs - June 2006 announcing the initiative.

Yes, the University of Florida will continue to employ a decentralized ownership model with each department or college owning, leasing, or renting vehicles based on need.
What is the intent of the $3,000 annual fleet management assessment?
The annual fleet management assessment of $3,000 per vehicle parked in a reserved space or area on campus is a disincentive to having a vehicle. The hope is that the fee will encourage critical evaluation of vehicle ownership and eliminate unnecessary vehicles on campus.
Where did the minimum usage of 6,000 miles per year to justify ownership come from?
This is an initial target utilization figure. Many of the State and University plans we researched began with a low initial target and increased the recommended utilization over time. There is currently no plan to increase this recommend utilization rate, however, increased utilization is increased efficiency.
Do I have to justify that we will meet the minimum travel mileage before we purchase a vehicle?
No. However, Departments and colleges are discouraged from purchasing or owning vehicles that will not meet the minimum travel mileage criterion.
What are my options for travel without owning a car?
Lease and rental services are currently available through Avis as well as Enterprise; contract pricing for these agencies can be found on the UF Purchasing web site. Enterprise rental has been added to enhance the type and size of vehicles available. Fleet Management Services is negotiating alternative transportation services, including hourly rentals, through a car-sharing service such as Zipcar.
